As a Gullah culture educator, I teach that these stories were essential for the Gullah Geechee Heritage. They taught our ancestors to be vigilant, to protect their homes with blue-painted shutters (Haint Blue), and to understand the spiritual laws of the Ethiopian Ocean: the original name of the South Atlantic that carried our ancestors to these Rice-Engineering Territories.
