Why is Charleston called the Holy City?
For generations, millions of people have heard Charleston described as The Holy City, yet very few have ever stopped to ask the question: Why?
This website was created to explore that question. Not through legends. Not through assumptions. But through history, geography, culture, faith, architecture, archaeology, the Gullah Geechee people, and the stories that have shaped one of America’s most fascinating cities.
More Than a Name
Charleston is one of the most photographed cities in America. Visitors come for its beautiful churches, cobblestone streets, historic homes, gardens, harbor, and Southern charm.

Who Is Chief Godfrey KHill?
Chief Godfrey KHill is an author, historian, cultural educator, and founder of Gullah Geechee Tours.
For years, he has dedicated his work to researching Charleston’s history, preserving Gullah Geechee heritage, and helping visitors understand the people, places, and events that shaped the Holy City.
His work combines historical research, books, walking experiences, public speaking, and cultural education to encourage visitors to look beyond the surface and ask deeper questions.
