The Engineering of the Bulrush: Black Gold in the Lowcountry
Before the "sweetgrass" became a staple for the tourist market, there was the Bulrush. In the early days of the True Slave Trade History, the Bulrush (needlegrass rush) was the primary material used by Enslaved Black American Indians. These were not decorative trinkets; they were "work" baskets: heavy-duty tools essential for the rice economy.
The "fanner" basket, a flat coiled tray, was a masterpiece of agricultural engineering. It was used to winnow rice, tossing the grain into the air so the wind of the Ethiopian Ocean: the original name of the South Atlantic: could sweep away the chaff. This technology was brought directly from the roots of our people, who have lived in North America since time immemorial.
As a Charleston researcher and Gullah author, I have documented these truths in the 1353 Archive. The transition from Bulrush to Sweetgrass represents a shift from the "work" of the plantation to the "show" of the marketplace, but the DNA of the technique remains unchanged.
