Authentic Gullah History Requires Context
A responsible Charleston history tour should explain more than where a building stands. It should address the human systems that made the city prosperous and the people who were denied freedom within those systems.
The Charleston slave trade was part of a larger Atlantic economy. Enslaved Africans were brought to the Lowcountry, sold, forced to labor, and separated from families. Their skills and knowledge contributed to the development of agriculture, construction, domestic work, crafts, transportation, and commerce.
